McFarland to speak to students at Murray State
Murray State University alum Dr. Edward McFarland will visit MSU on Wednesday, Sept. 23, where he will make a presentation to students and faculty about current trends in orthopedic surgery. The session, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in 1212 Jones Hall in the science complex on campus, will provide students with information related to medical school and the medical profession. McFarland, a 1998 MSU Distinguished Alumnus, has spoken around the world on sports medicine.
McFarland graduated from Murray State in 1978 with a degree in biology. After earning his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1982 and completing his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1987, he joined Johns Hopkins in 1992 where he created and directed the Johns Hopkins Division of Sports and Medicine and Shoulder Surgery.
He is the Wayne H. Lewis Professor of Orthopedic and Shoulder Surgery and Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Sports Medicine. He also is the consulting orthopedic surgeon for the Baltimore Orioles and has published 120 publications about sports medicine including a book with MSU alum Richard Blalock II ’06, “Examination of the Shoulder: The Complete Guide.”
McFarland played football at Murray State from 1975 through 1978 and was a two-time All OVC Defensive Back. He was selected to Academic All America in 1977 and in 1993 was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame. A member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and Omicron Delta Kappa, he is an alumnus of Sigma Chi fraternity.
