Ashbrook Endowed Scholarship Fund

Dr. Beulah “Boots” Ashbrook, a 1955 Murray State University alumna of Memphis, Tenn., is a pioneer for women in biology. In an era when most women did not pursue a professional career, Ashbrook excelled in the field of medical laboratory research and technology.

Upon her death, a Trust will establish the “Beulah M. “Boots” Ashbrook Endowed Scholarship Fund.” This fund will assist deserving students in the MSU College of Science, Engineering and Technology who are majoring in biology or medical sciences.

Waterfield Lecture to air on KET

MURRAY, Ky. – Murray State University’s (MSU) Harry Lee Waterfield Distinguished Lecture is scheduled to air on the Kentucky Educational Television (KET) network in June. The lecture was held on April 15, with speaker Dr. Constantine Curris who is currently a member of the Murray State University Board of Regents. Dr. Curris spoke on “Higher Education and the Politics of Washington.”

MSU’s Hancock Biological Station dedicates new pavilion

Murray State University’s Hancock Biological Station (HBS) on Kentucky Lake dedicated its new solar-powered educational pavilion prior to the end of the spring semester. Remarks at the dedication were delivered by Dr. Randy Dunn, MSU president; Dr. Steve Cobb, dean of the college of science, engineering and technology; and Dr. David White, HBS director and professor of biology. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by the switch-on of the solar-powered lighting system.

Morgans establish major endowment for men’s basketball

Tradition is a term Murray State University uses to describe its academics, architecture, athletics and annual events. The Morgan family of Benton, Ky., has been a part of both creating and continuing traditions at MSU since the university’s beginnings in 1922.

Tradition is what Bill Morgan, a 1950 MSU graduate and retired command pilot from the U.S. Air Force, and his wife, Irene, are helping continue with the Basketball Endowment for Success and Tradition (BEST) Fund. The fund seeks to raise $1 million to create an endowment for the men’s basketball program, with funds targeted for fifth-year and summer school scholarships; increasing budgets for allowable recruiting expenses; and general enhancement of the basketball budget to allow the Racers to maintain and increase their position as one of the best NCAA Division I programs of all time.

Local High School Japanese Teacher Receives National Award

MURRAY, Ky. – The United States Japan Foundation (USJF) has announced that the winner of the 2010 Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Award for Japanese language teaching is Ms. Masayo Nakamura, an employee of Murray State University and the Japanese language teacher at Murray, Calloway County and Marshall County high schools. This national award was established by the USJF to recognize exceptional teachers who further mutual understanding between Americans and Japanese, and includes a monetary award of $2500 as well as a project award of $5000.

MSU May 2010 Commencement to air on KET

MURRAY, Ky- Kentucky Educational Television (KET) has announced that it will broadcast Murray State University’s May 2010 Commencement and Residential College Investiture ceremony to its viewers. Three shows are scheduled. The first show will air on Friday, May 21 at 4 p.m. It will be repeated on Tuesday, May 25 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, June 2 at 10 a.m. Times stated are Eastern Standard Time (EST).

The programming is made possible in conjunction with MSU Electronic Media Services, a unit of the University Communications area.
